Mr. Jenkins is an 81 years old White male. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease 7 years ago. He is currently residing in his home but attend a day care center for individuals with his condition. His attendance increased over time and currently he is attending there more than 5 days a week. According to the staff and the healthcare workers at the day care he is doing well and is well integrated. Some months ago, his condition worsen and he is unable to communicate verbally and capacity for decision making is limited due to memory loss. Much of his daily living activities such as eating or bathing has been impacted by his condition. His wife of 50 years attends to him with the assistance of their family and a case worker. Few weeks ago, in a routine medical visit they found Cancer. The wife and the children decided not to pursue treatment to prolong his life. The daughter informed the staff at the day care and also mentioned to them that incase of a heart attack, no medical provider should be called. Since there is no advance directive pertaining to his wished, the staff informed the daughter that it will be difficult to follow her wishes. The family argued that prior to his condition, Mr. Jenkins stated to them that he does not wish any life prolonging treatment and assistance.
